Quick answer
To get an ESA letter online, you complete a health questionnaire, a clinician licensed in your state reviews it, you speak by phone or video when your state or the clinician requires it, and a signed PDF letter follows if documentation is appropriate. Most clients hear from their clinician within one business day, though some states require a 30 day relationship first.
Key points
- Online ESA evaluations are lawful when the clinician is licensed in the state where you are located and follows that state's rules.
- A real evaluation includes clinician review, and often a live phone or video conversation, before any letter is written.
- California, Arkansas, Louisiana and Montana have 30 day relationship rules for some ESA documentation, and Colorado and Florida have in person rules for some clinicians.
- Same day letters are rarely possible after an honest evaluation, and in some states they are not allowed at all.
Is it legal to get an ESA letter online?
Yes, when it is done properly. Telehealth is an established way to receive mental health care, and an emotional support animal letter online can be just as valid as one written in an office. The key rule is licensing: the clinician generally must be licensed, or hold a recognized compact privilege, in the state where you are located at the time of the evaluation.
Some states add requirements on top of that. Florida accepts information from an out of state practitioner only if that practitioner has given you in person care at least once, so a Florida licensed clinician or Florida registered telehealth provider is the safer route.
In Colorado, mental health licensees and nurses must have met you in person before making an assistance animal finding. Kentucky requires a Kentucky license and an active practice in the state. Our state law hub lists the rules for every state.
Step 1: Complete the free online assessment
The process starts with a questionnaire that takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It asks where you live, what animal or animals you have, and how you have been feeling: sleep, stress, mood, concentration, and how symptoms affect work, school, relationships and daily routines. It also asks how your animal helps.
There is no payment to start, and there are no right answers to aim for. The questionnaire gives the clinician a starting picture so the evaluation can focus on what matters for you.
Step 2: Choose your evaluation and pay securely
Once your answers are in, you choose the evaluation that fits: one pet, more than one pet, a renewal, or a psychiatric service dog evaluation. Payment goes through Stripe, and every Pet ESA Service price is a one time fee with no subscription.
Payment covers the clinician's time and judgment, not a predetermined result. If the clinician does not approve your completed assessment, you receive a 100 percent refund of the evaluation payment. Full prices are on our pricing page.
Step 3: Clinician review and a phone or video consult when required
A licensed mental health professional licensed in your state, such as an LCSW, LPC, LMHC, LMFT or psychologist, reviews your assessment. Their clinical decision is independent. They may ask follow up questions by message, and they connect with you by phone or video when your state's rules or their own clinical judgment call for it.
This conversation is not a test. It gives the clinician a chance to understand your symptoms in your own words, clarify anything that was unclear, and confirm that an animal genuinely helps. Our guide on how to prepare for your ESA evaluation covers the questions clinicians commonly ask.
Step 4: Letter delivery and landlord verification
If documentation is clinically appropriate, you receive a signed letter as a PDF by email. It shows the clinician's name, credentials, license number, license type and issuing state, the date, the animals covered and a statement of disability related need, without disclosing a diagnosis.
If your housing provider wants to confirm the letter, we help them verify it at no extra charge. If the clinician decides a letter is not appropriate, they tell you, and your evaluation payment is refunded.
| Step | What you do | What the clinician or our team does | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Assessment | Answer questions about your symptoms, animal and state | Your answers are saved for clinical review | About 5 to 10 minutes |
| 2. Checkout | Choose an evaluation and pay through Stripe | Your evaluation goes to a clinician licensed in your state | A few minutes |
| 3. Review and consult | Answer follow up questions and join a call if required | Reviews your answers and evaluates your need | Most clients hear from their clinician within one business day |
| 4. Documentation | Receive the PDF and share it with your housing provider | Signs the letter if clinically appropriate | Usually 24 to 72 hours after the evaluation |
| 5. Verification | Point your landlord to the verification contact | Our team confirms the letter is genuine | At no extra charge |
Why a same day ESA letter is often not possible
Searches for a same day ESA letter are common, and the honest answer is that it rarely happens after a real evaluation. A clinician needs time to review your answers, sometimes ask questions or schedule a call, and decide carefully. A letter issued minutes after checkout usually means no one looked closely, and that is the kind of document HUD's May 2026 memo and several state laws discount.
In some states, the law itself sets a waiting period. These rules apply no matter which provider you choose.
| State | Rule | Citation |
|---|---|---|
| California | 30 day client provider relationship and clinical evaluation before emotional support dog documentation | H&S Code 122317 to 122319 (AB 468) |
| Arkansas | 30 day relationship for emotional support dog documentation, plus a yearly evaluation | Act 268 of 2023 |
| Louisiana | 30 day relationship with at least two sessions, in person or remote | Act 558 of 2024 |
| Montana | Montana licensed professional with a 30 day relationship, or another reliable source | MCA 70-24-114 |
| Iowa | Clinician must state whether a 30 day relationship existed; finding valid 12 months | Iowa Code 216.8C |
| Colorado | Mental health licensees and nurses must have met the patient in person | C.R.S. 12-245-229 |
How to make the process go smoothly
Answer the assessment honestly and specifically, use the email address you check most, and keep your phone nearby in case your clinician reaches out. If your state has a relationship period, start early, ideally well before a lease signing or move in date.
When you are ready, start the free assessment. It takes a few minutes, costs nothing, and tells you what your state requires before you decide on an evaluation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a same day ESA letter?
Occasionally a clinician can complete a review quickly, but a same day letter should never be promised. Clinicians need time to evaluate you properly, and California, Arkansas and Louisiana set 30 day relationship rules for some or all ESA documentation.
Do I have to talk to someone for an online ESA letter?
Often, yes. Many states expect live contact, and clinicians may call or video chat when their judgment calls for it. A service that never involves a conversation with a clinician is a warning sign.
Is an online ESA letter valid if I move to another state?
It may be accepted, but it is strongest in the state where the clinician is licensed. If you move, a renewal evaluation with a clinician licensed in your new state avoids questions, and some states, such as Kentucky and Indiana, have specific rules for people who recently moved.
What happens if the clinician does not approve my assessment?
You do not receive a letter, and Pet ESA Service refunds 100 percent of the evaluation payment. The clinician may also suggest other kinds of support that fit your situation better.
Will my landlord accept an ESA letter obtained online?
Many housing providers do, especially when the clinician is licensed in your state and the license can be verified. Acceptance depends on your state's law and the provider's review, and HUD's 2026 memo means federal enforcement now focuses on trained animals.
