Quick answer
Pet ESA Service writes its guidance from primary sources such as statutes, regulations, agency guidance and court decisions, dates every legal claim, and updates pages when the law changes. Our content is general information, not legal advice or a diagnosis. The most recent full update, on October 8, 2026, reflects HUD's May 22, 2026 enforcement memorandum and state by state ESA rules.

Why we hold a high bar
Emotional support animals and service dogs sit where health care and law meet, and readers often come to us under stress: a lease deadline, a denied request, a move. Getting a detail wrong can cost someone their home or their money. We write with that in mind, and we would rather say less than say something we cannot support.
How we source information
We start with primary sources: federal statutes and regulations, including the eCFR; guidance from HUD, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Justice; state statutes from official legislature websites; statements from state fair housing agencies; and court decisions. Each legal claim names its source and date, and pages list references so you can check them yourself.
We read analysis from disability rights organizations and law firms to understand context, then confirm the underlying facts in the primary source before we rely on them. When a source cannot be confirmed, we say so or leave the claim out.
How we write
We lead with the answer, use plain language and keep paragraphs short. We describe what a law, agency or court says, with dates, rather than telling you what will happen in your case. Our content does not diagnose anyone and is not legal advice.
We do not publish fake statistics, testimonials, reviews or ratings, and we do not invent experts or clinicians. We do not describe animals as registered or certified, promise approval, or suggest that ESAs have public access or airline cabin rights. See our standards for the commitments behind the service itself.
Review, corrections and updates
Before publishing, we check each page against its sources, and our state pages draw on a state by state table verified on October 8, 2026. We monitor federal agencies, state legislatures and state fair housing agencies, and we review affected pages when something changes.
If you spot an error, email hello@petesaservice.com with the page and the source you are relying on. We review every report, correct confirmed errors, and record significant updates in the changelog on this page. Our state law hub and resource library are updated under the same process.
